A 100-Year Vision, Told Through One Scroll — Built to Move Donors to Give.
What Ontik Technology designed with the University of Toronto to turn a century of legacy and a building's future into a fundraising platform donors actually engage with
The School of Information at the University of Toronto set out to mark its centennial with something more ambitious than a campaign brochure: a digital platform that could carry alumni and donors through the school's history, its hundred-year vision, and the renovation of the Bissell Building — and move them to invest in what comes next. They needed a partner who could shape both the narrative and the technology behind it.
A fundraising campaign built around a hundred-year vision and a building renovation needed more than information — it needed to make visitors feel the weight of the school's legacy and the promise of its future in the same experience. The site had to carry rich media — photos, videos, architectural renderings, interactive timelines — without becoming slow or cluttered. It had to guide a broad audience, including older alumni less comfortable with complex web interfaces, naturally from story to action. And donation opportunities had to feel like a natural next step in the narrative, not an interruption to it. The School's own team also needed to keep the site current with campaign milestones and donor news long after launch.
A fundraising campaign succeeds on emotional connection, not feature lists. The site had to make a hundred years of history and an unbuilt future feel equally real — and lead every visitor naturally toward the decision to give.
Ontik built the campaign site as a scroll-based narrative experience in React.js, structured around the School's hundred-year vision, its history, and the Bissell Building renovation. Dynamic sections wove together photos, faculty and student videos, architectural renderings of the renovation, and interactive timelines marking key milestones — built to be lightweight and fast-loading despite the volume of media. Donation calls-to-action were embedded directly into the storytelling flow, including named-giving opportunities tied to specific parts of the renovated facility, so visitors moved from inspiration to action without friction. The site was developed mobile-first and built to University of Toronto brand standards, with accessibility considered carefully given the broad alumni audience. A lightweight CMS/JSON content structure let the School's own team publish news, campaign updates, and donor spotlights without needing developer support. The hard part Ontik resolved: making a campaign about the next hundred years feel immediate and personal in a single scroll.

The website launched as the digital centrepiece of the School of Information's fundraising campaign and was met with strong engagement from the first weeks. Visitors spent considerable time exploring the vision and renovation content, and many moved directly from the storytelling sections into donation inquiries. Alumni and donors praised the site's clarity and emotional resonance, and the campaign saw a boost in donation pledges during its initial phase. The School now has a permanent, updatable showcase for its future — one that continues to attract interest well beyond launch.
Outcomes delivered
Central digital platform for a multi-million dollar fundraising campaign
Extended visitor engagement with the School's 100-year vision content
Increased donation inquiries and pledges following launch
A permanent, team-editable showcase for ongoing campaign updates
Building a campaign that needs to move people to give, not just inform them?
